Through the company’s partnership with Petro-Canada Lubricants Inc., Harvey’s Oil Ltd. has experienced significant growth in its industrial lubricant, light and base oil division while maintaining its customer service focus in home heat. Specifically, the lubricants division sells to the fishing, offshore, mining, manufacturing, construction, food and automotive industry.

THE ROLE
The Apprentice HVAC Technician is a skilled professional who works under the supervision of the licensed HVAC Technician. They are responsible for assisting HVAC installations, maintenance, repairs, and servicing heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems in homes, businesses, and industrial facilities. Apprentices also attend formal training as part of their apprenticeship program to ensure they meet the technical requirements for certification. Additionally, the Apprentice will support day-to-day activities of the Business.
Specific responsibilities of this role include but are not limited to the following:
• Assist in the installation of heating, cooling, and ventilation systems in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings.
• Help with setting up ductwork, refrigerant lines, thermostats, and electrical connections.
• Learn how to install HVAC equipment like air conditioners, furnaces, and heat pumps under supervision.
• Assist in performing regular maintenance tasks such as cleaning filters, inspecting ducts, and checking refrigerant levels.
• Help diagnose HVAC system issues, including temperature discrepancies, airflow problems, and mechanical failures.
• Participate in replacing and repairing faulty components like motors, fans, compressors, and wiring.
• Perform basic repairs under supervision, such as replacing filters, changing belts, or tightening connections.
• Under guidance, diagnose HVAC system issues and identify necessary repairs.
• Communicate effectively with customers, providing assistance on minor service-related inquiries.
• Ensure safe and courteous service while assisting senior technicians in the field.
• Adhere to safety protocols and industry regulations, including refrigerant handling and disposal
• Ensure that all work complies with local building codes, environmental laws, and manufacturer guidelines.
• Attend formal training programs at a technical school or community college, as required by the apprenticeship program.
• Participate in ongoing training to stay updated with the latest HVAC technologies and standards.
THE CANDIDATE
The ideal candidate will have the following:
• Technical Training: Completion of a registered trades program (eg: HVAC, Electrical, Plumbing, Sheet metal) or apprenticeship program.
• Have a valid registered Apprenticeship in Newfoundland & Labrador
• High School Diploma or Equivalent: Completion of secondary school is required.
• Ozone-Depleting Substances (ODS) Certification to handle refrigerants
• Effective computer knowledge including MS office 365
• Basic understanding of HVAC systems, including heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems.
• Ability to follow detailed instructions and manuals.
• Familiarity with basic electrical and mechanical concepts, especially in HVAC systems.
• Willingness to learn to operate more advanced diagnostic tools and equipment.
• Strong attention to detail and the ability to follow procedures accurately.
• Good problem-solving skills to assist in diagnosing and resolving issues.
• Strong communication skills to interact effectively with customers and coworkers.
• Meet physical requirements of the job.
• Ability to work well as part of a team and under the supervision of experienced professionals.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced, multitask environment
• Ability to work on a flexible schedule based on business requirements
